On December 14, in an Avalanche-hosted webinar, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence’s Senior Solutions Architect broke the news of Alibaba’s Web3 expansion strategy.

Alibaba is positioning itself as the core of the new internet. Alex Guo, a senior solution architect at Alibaba Cloud, talked about the transition from Web2 to Web3.
“Web3 is the next major evolution of the internet,” Guo said as she outlined Alibaba Cloud’s Web3 vision statement. And Alibaba is partnering with Avalanche (AVAX), the cryptocurrency and blockchain platform, to be part of that evolution.
According to a pyramid illustrated in the presentation, Alibaba is pursuing every aspect of Web3, from infrastructure development and design of the most popular ecosystems to developer platforming and blockchain support.
In their plans for the blockchain, Alibaba aims to provide “full node services and Cross-Chain services by partnering with public chains.” Guo said in the presentation that the collaboration with Avalanche stems from this. Alibaba is partnering with top public chains, of which Avalanche is one. This collaboration will allow Alibaba to provide and control the blockchain infrastructure upon which Web3 is built.
Alex Guo assured that Alibaba was taking a “partners first” approach to their Web3 expansion and development.
Web3 developers need to decide which blockchain they will be building upon first, Guo said, and Avalanche is “obviously the best choice.” Developers also have to figure out how they interact with the blockchain and what infrastructure they will employ for node services, wallets, key management, etc., as well as what tools they use for developing in Web3.
As expected, Alibaba Cloud plans to, with partners’ help, serve each of these needs. “We want to lower the barriers (for developers) to build their Web3 applications and capture emerging opportunities.”
Alex Guo went on to outline the Web3 products offered by Alibaba Cloud. Besides the fundamental Web3 infrastructure developed with public chain partners like Avalanche, Alibaba Cloud offers solutions for developing for or interacting with Web3. These include computing, storage, and networking infrastructure: all kinds of IaaS and PaaS services, Guo said.
Also included, according to the presentation, are ecosystems and developer tools like DApp Development Kits, a one-stop mobile development platform, a low-code development platform, and a technical community on Opensea for developers to interact. Beyond this, Alibaba provides unique industrial-specific solutions for Defi/Cefi, GameFi, Media and Entertainment.
Alibaba is currently also working on security solutions for blockchain interactions and the cloud, according to Guo.
