Ethereum Fusaka Hard Fork Set for Late 2025 with Controversial EVM Changes

Fusaka Upgrade Timeline Confirmed

Ethereum’s Fusaka hard fork will be scheduled for the third or fourth quarter of 2025, Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Tomasz Kajetan Stańczak reported. On April 28, Stańczak posted on X confirming that while the specific rollout date remains to be decided, the team is looking to late 2025.

The upgrade is set to include the controversial EVM Object Format (EOF) upgrade, which has sparked extensive debate within the developer community.

Understanding the EVM Object Format (EOF)

The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) powers all Ethereum smart contracts. The upcoming EOF upgrade proposes a major shift: introducing a versioned, structured container format for smart contract bytecode.

EOF will replace the current free-form bytecode with a defined structure featuring:

  • A header with the 0xEF00 hexadecimal value and a version number
  • A section table with metadata
  • Code and optional data segmented sections

This change is aimed at making it more efficient, impose code and data separation, and support future upgrades in a neater way.

Supporters vs. Critics

EOF contains 12 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and guarantees benefits like easier contract upgrades, improved security, and a more organized system.

But not everyone agrees. Developer Pascal Caversaccio warned in a March post on Ethereum Magicians that EOF complicates the EVM by introducing new semantics, altering most opcodes, and necessitating substantial tooling changes, which could come with fresh vulnerabilities.

He argued that the same goals could be achieved with smaller, less invasive upgrades without overhauling the base of the EVM. Moreover, maintaining the legacy EVM along with the new EOF framework might be a long-term support headache.

Increase in Community Resistance

Community sentiment towards EOF is varied but relatively conservative. A poll on the Ethereum governance platform ETHPulse showed that 39 voters who own nearly 17,745 ETH oppose the EOF upgrade, while seven voters with less than 300 ETH voted for it.

Some developers also had more general concerns: Is it prudent to undertake significant changes to the EVM in the first place? A stable EVM, they contend, is critical to developing strong tooling and applications.

With the Fusaka hard fork looming, Ethereum is having one of its most impactful debates regarding protocol evolution and future stability.
