The so-called offer was made available as a PDF file. Unknown to Ronin, the document was a Trojan. The fraudster intruded the network successfully and gained access to private information. The hacker gained access to 4 of Axie Infinity’s network’s 9 validators.
According to a post from April, five validators were needed to transfer the funds, leaving the hackers with just one more validator needed.
According to Sky Mavis, the Axie DAO was used by hackers to accomplish the hack.
Sky Mavis was allowed to sign multiple transactions by the Axie DAO. Even though this came to an end in December 2021, access was not taken away. The hacker now had access to the signature as a result.
Sky Mavis partnered with Binance to fund $150 million in the first few days of April. The exploit’s victims will receive compensation from the earnings. The money would start to be returned on June 28.
Defi hacks have surged dramatically this year, costing $2 billion in total. Notably, the amount of funds lost to DeFi hacks two years ago was far less than $20 million. DeFi projects will have to be on the lookout to prevent fraudsters from exploiting loopholes in their protocols.
