Optimism Warns Against Fake "Airdrops" as it Allocates 10 Million OP for Developments

On the 17th of January 2023, Optimism warned the general public to be skeptical of fake news relating to OP Airdrop, that isn’t from their official handles.

⚠️ Be aware: Optimism has not released any news relating to OP Airdrop #2. ⚠️

Always be skeptical of any and all information from accounts other than @optimismFND, @OptimismGov, and @OPLabsPBC.

— Optimism (@Optimism) January 17, 2023

In the early weeks of December 2022, Optimism announced its second round of Retroactive Public Goods Funding. Retro PGF 2 will allocate 10m OP tokens to fund public goods that support the development and usage of the OP Stack.

Although they warned that no news concerning OP Airdrop has been released yet and people should not trust any and all information from accounts other than @optimismFND, @OptimismGov, and @OPLabsPBC.

Retroactive public goods funding or RetroPGF is Optimism’s solution to fixing the problem of misaligned incentives in software development. It functions to continue to bring better developer tooling, widespread user education, safer infrastructure, and industry-leading research to the network through the funding of public goods.

Its vision is to build a global system where a positive impact on the collective is rewarded by profit to the individual. Retro PGF is an experimental mechanism to find positive impact.

The OP Stack is a series of modules that work together to form coherent, reliable blockchains. Each of these components implements a specific layer of the stack which enables developers to build their own bespoke, custom blockchains to meet their specific needs.

Bringing the OP Stack to a broader market is an important initiative for Optimism to drive Web3 mass adoption. And that’s why the funding focuses on OP Stack.

The comprehensive Retro PGF document explains three categories in which developers can decide to partake of.

One, infrastructure + dependencies comprising software used to build or deploy the OP Stack or contribute to the protocols or standards on which the OP stack depends.

Two, tooling + utilities which helps builders create applications on Optimism mainnet, build on the OP Stack, interact with the governance of the Collective, or use applications built on Optimism.

And finally, education which functions to spread awareness and knowledge of how Optimism works, whether technically or socially.

It is no secret that the beginning phase of kicking off a project is extraordinarily difficult. The majority of startups don’t make it to any kind of exit, and it’s even harder for FOSS projects. RetroPGF 2 focuses on a narrow, Optimism-specific scope of impact to drive the core engine for ecosystem growth.

Hopefully, this scope will be expanded In the near future.
