Compound Finance Approves $52 Million Budget and New Leadership Team for Institutional DeFi Push

Compound Finance has approved a $52 million budget and installed a new leadership team as the lending protocol pivots toward institutions, according to a CoinDesk report. The move comes after total value locked on the protocol dropped to $1.2 billion from a peak of $12 billion in September 2021.

Why Compound is shifting away from its retail roots

Compound was among the first DeFi lending protocols to productize pooled lending markets, but retail-driven liquidity has faded. The leadership overhaul and record budget are intended to reset the protocol’s growth path after its on-chain capital base contracted sharply. Rather than compete for the same speculative retail flows, the project is now positioning its infrastructure for real-world asset offerings, partner integrations, and credit products that align with traditional finance compliance expectations.

The emphasis on compliance and technical standards marks a departure from the permissionless-only ethos that defined Compound’s early growth. It also reflects a broader reality in decentralized finance: institutional users are more likely to provide durable liquidity if protocols can meet counterparty, audit, and reporting requirements.

The institutional strategy behind the record budget

Of the $52 million, the leadership team is expected to prioritize product development and institutional onboarding. The plan includes building credit infrastructure that can support regulated entities, expanding integrations with partners that serve financial institutions, and developing tokenized real-world asset markets. The push is designed to increase both deposit supply and loan demand from non-retail participants.

The protocol’s shift does not guarantee a return to the 2021 liquidity environment. DeFi-wide assets have declined amid weaker market conditions and security incidents, and institutional adoption remains selective. Still, the combination of new leadership and a clearly funded strategy gives Compound one of the more explicit institutional mandates among established lending protocols.

What to watch as DeFi matures

If Compound successfully builds institutional credit infrastructure, it could act as a test case for how older DeFi protocols repurpose their existing technology rather than issuing new tokens or pursuing speculative incentives. The next indicators to watch include governance allocations from the budget, partnerships with regulated service providers, and whether total value locked stabilizes or grows outside the retail segment.

For now, the $52 million commitment and leadership replacement are important signals, but execution will determine whether Compound can translate its first-mover history into a sustainable institutional lending business.
