Qiao Wang: Zcash Is Bitcoin That Can Change

Qiao Wang, co-founder of Alliance DAO, offered a provocative definition in a clip highlighted by Wu Blockchain on September 25: Zcash is Bitcoin that is capable of changes. The claim places Zcash inside Bitcoin’s monetary lineage rather than positioning it as a separate altcoin. It also opens a larger question about whether protocol flexibility strengthens or weakens a digital money system.

The core claim: Bitcoin with upgrade capacity

Wang’s framing matches his previous disclosure that Qiao Wang Says His Personal Crypto Portfolio Holds Only Bitcoin and Zcash. For him, the two chains appear to represent different answers to the same problem: Bitcoin supplies the hardest, most predictable monetary base, while Zcash can test changes that Bitcoin’s social layer would reject or delay. Zcash’s shielded addresses and consensus parameters are examples of features that require more programmatic flexibility than Bitcoin typically permits.

That distinction matters because Bitcoin’s upgrade process is deliberately conservative. Changes need broad ecosystem consensus across miners, nodes, developers, and users before activation. Yet the market has repeatedly rewarded that predictability. As Bybit CEO: Bitcoin Still Far From Digital Gold points out, Bitcoin is still being evaluated as a mature reserve asset, making its resistance to unilateral change part of the store-of-value argument.

Why Bitcoin’s resistance to change is a feature, not only a bug

Zcash’s governance has historically allowed upgrades to be researched, specified, and shipped with more coordination, but also with more dependence on core teams. That ability to change offers a different bargain: it can adopt new cryptographic techniques or adjust consensus rules without waiting for years of public debate. However, it also creates uncertainty about future monetary policy or privacy guarantees. While Bitcoin can trade around levels such as Bitcoin Steadies Near $84,459 Before $18B Options Expiry, the wider question is whether governance-driven change strengthens or weakens a money system.

If Zcash successfully implements useful upgrades while preserving censorship resistance, it may offer evidence that optional privacy features can be introduced without breaking monetary credibility. But if Zcash struggles with governance or user confidence, the comparison will reinforce Bitcoin’s case that change is a risk, not a feature. Either outcome provides a useful signal for builders considering privacy layers, sidechains, or future soft fork proposals.

For now, the clip is a reminder that Bitcoin’s design choices are trade-offs, not accidents. Privacy, scalability, and governance remain open debates, and Zcash offers one of the clearest live comparisons for measuring how far Bitcoin’s conservative approach can go. That does not settle the argument, but it gives market participants a concrete framework for evaluating future upgrade proposals.
