Alameda-Backed Bitcoin Miner Genesis Digital Raises About $900 Million for AI Data Center Pivot

Genesis Digital Assets, the Bitcoin miner that received more than $1 billion from FTX-linked Alameda Research, has raised about $900 million as it accelerates a shift into AI data center infrastructure, according to a report from Wublockchain. The reported figure would rank among the larger private capital infusions in the Bitcoin mining-to-AI transition. The capital injection signals how established Bitcoin mining operators are repositioning their power and data-center capabilities as AI compute demand expands.

The move follows previous reporting on Genesis Digital’s pivot discussions, including an SWI Group Raises €800M to Convert Genesis Digital to AI effort. That earlier structure highlighted how outside capital was already being assembled around the company’s data-center footprint, even before the newly reported $900 million raise.

Why Miners Are Moving Into AI Data Centers

Bitcoin miners control large-scale power contracts, cooling systems, and physical security layers that are also valuable for AI training and inference workloads. Shifting some capacity toward AI hosting can diversify revenue beyond mining economics, which remain closely tied to Bitcoin’s price and network difficulty. For Genesis Digital, the raise is positioned as a way to add or retrofit facilities for high-performance computing rather than simply expanding hashrate. This dual-use strategy is becoming common among miners with access to stranded or low-cost energy, as it allows them to serve two different compute markets from the same physical sites.

The broader institutional appetite for Bitcoin-linked infrastructure is visible in other capital raises. For example, a Bitcoin-Denominated Life Insurer Raises $37.5M Led by Bain round shows how traditional investors continue to back companies with Bitcoin-denominated or Bitcoin-adjacent models, even when the operating focus is not pure mining.

Implications for Bitcoin Infrastructure and What to Watch

The funding could reshape how Genesis Digital allocates its existing mining capacity. If more power is dedicated to AI clients, that may slow the company’s hashrate growth at a time when Bitcoin mining competition remains intense. At the same time, it may improve cash-flow stability and reduce the pressure to sell mined Bitcoin during weak market periods. Investors are likely to monitor whether the company discloses specific AI customer commitments and whether those contracts provide enough visibility to offset mining volatility.

Still, the expanding overlap between Bitcoin infrastructure and high-value compute raises security considerations. Recent Glassnode research pointed to the exposure of public keys linked to older Bitcoin holdings, underscoring the importance of custody and key management as the ecosystem matures. The Glassnode: 6.26 Million BTC Have Public Keys Exposed to Quantum Computing Risks analysis is a reminder that infrastructure-scale risks are not limited to power and hardware.
