US consumer prices rose 0.6% in September 2026 and 3.7% from a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 14, 2026. The annual rate came in above the 3.6% analysts expected, and it lands two weeks before the Federal Reserve’s next rate decision on October 28, 2026.
Short answer: Inflation ran hotter than forecast in September 2026, driven by a 9.1% monthly jump in gasoline prices. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% for the month and 2.6% for the year, both above forecasts. Bitcoin fell from about $83,786 to a low of $82,513 in the 15 minutes after the 8:30 a.m. ET release, a drop of about 1.5%, according to Coinbase data.
Figures checked against the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Newsquawk, CoinDesk, Coinbase, Farside Investors and the Federal Reserve as of October 14, 2026.

- Headline CPI: +0.6% in September 2026 and +3.7% over 12 months, up from 3.4% in August 2026.
- Core CPI: +0.3% for the month and +2.6% over 12 months, versus forecasts of 0.2% and 2.5%.
- Main driver: gasoline rose 9.1% in September 2026 and accounted for over half of the monthly increase, the BLS said.
- Bitcoin: about −1.5% in the first 15 minutes after the release, from $83,786 to $82,513 on Coinbase.
- The Fed: it raised rates to 3.75%–4% on September 16, 2026; the next decision is due on October 28, 2026.
What the September CPI report showed
Prices rose faster in September 2026 than in August 2026 on almost every headline measure, according to the BLS release. The annual rate climbed from 3.4% to 3.7%, and the core rate from 2.4% to 2.6%.
| Measure | September 2026 | August 2026 | Forecast for September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| All items, monthly | +0.6% | +0.4% | +0.6% |
| All items, 12 months | +3.7% | +3.4% | +3.6% |
| Core (less food and energy), monthly | +0.3% | +0.3% | +0.2% |
| Core, 12 months | +2.6% | +2.4% | +2.5% |
| Energy, 12 months | +20.4% | +16.3% | |
| Gasoline, 12 months | +34.2% | +27.4% | |
| Shelter, 12 months | +3.2% | +3.0% | |
| Food, 12 months | +2.5% | +2.7% |

Energy did most of the work. The energy index rose 5.2% in September 2026 and gasoline 9.1%, while food prices were unchanged for the month. Within core prices, the BLS said recreation, used cars and trucks, education, airline fares, medical care and apparel rose, while communication was among the few major indexes that fell.

Why it matters: a headline rate driven by gasoline can fade if fuel prices fall, but core inflation above forecast is harder for the Fed to look past.
How bitcoin reacted
Bitcoin traded at $83,786 on Coinbase at 8:30 a.m. ET, just before the release. In the 15 minutes that followed, it fell to a low of $82,513, down about 1.5%. CoinDesk reported shortly after the release that, by its measure, bitcoin “dropped $1,000 on the news.”
The move came after a quiet morning: bitcoin had traded between about $83,250 and $83,830 from 7:00 a.m. ET until the data came out, according to Coinbase. A 15-minute move does not set the direction for the following days. Around the last Fed decision, flows turned after the event itself: spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $450 million on September 15, 2026, the day before the hike, then took in money for nine straight trading days after it, as our September 2026 Bitcoin ETF flows report shows.
What the report means for the Fed
The Fed raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75%–4% on September 16, 2026, in a 12-0 vote, according to its statement. Before the CPI release, most traders expected a pause on October 28, 2026 and a hike in December, CoinDesk reported; it added that the September numbers “just might put an October rate hike back on the table.”
Higher rates raise the return on cash and bonds, which competes with assets that pay no yield, such as bitcoin. Bitcoin was about 34% below its October 6, 2025 record of $126,277 on October 12, 2026, according to our five-indicator market check, which also covers valuation, sentiment and ETF flows.
Where ETF flows stand
US spot Bitcoin ETFs had net outflows of $276.0 million in October 2026 through October 13, according to Farside Investors. The funds took in $175.7 million on October 13, 2026, the day before the CPI report, led by Fidelity’s FBTC at $103.1 million and BlackRock’s IBIT at $65.9 million.
The largest outflows came on October 7 and October 8, 2026, a combined $729.0 million. Daily numbers by fund are on our October 2026 Bitcoin ETF flows page, and holdings are in the spot Bitcoin ETF tracker.

Was the September CPI higher than expected? Yes, on three of four main measures. The monthly headline rate matched the 0.6% forecast, but the annual rate (3.7% vs 3.6%), core monthly rate (0.3% vs 0.2%) and core annual rate (2.6% vs 2.5%) were all higher, according to the Newsquawk consensus.
