Bitcoin Hovers Near $64,000 as Thin Volume Points to Stalled Participation, Not Panic

Glowing Bitcoin symbol surrounded by connected neon nodes in a dark futuristic city.

According to CoinDesk’s live market update, Bitcoin flirted with the $64,000 level as U.S. stocks kicked off August on a strong note. The flagship cryptocurrency pulled back from above $65,000 earlier in the week, prompting questions about whether a deeper retracement was underway.

Market jitters were palpable. The warning from the Coinkite CEO telling Coldcard users to ‘move your funds now’ amid a security alert served as a stark reminder of the custodial and infrastructure risks lingering in the ecosystem. Those unease layers compound thin order books, making every dip feel sharper than it might objectively be.

Against that backdrop, Bitcoin managed to hold a monthly gain in July, but analysts now expect a ‘choppy’ August as the exhaustion of forced selling removes a cushion. With the market still fragile, even modest selling pressure can cascade through thinning depth.

Reflecting the cautious mood, traders are bracing for a potential August pullback, with $60,000 Bitcoin puts emerging as the top trade, reinforcing expectations of a test of lower support levels.

Thin Volume, Not Panic Selling, Weighs on Bitcoin

ARP Digital’s Yusuf Fakhro told CoinDesk that Bitcoin’s decline from $65,000 reflected “stalled participation more than forced selling.” In his view, the market simply lacks the spot depth to absorb a wave of sell orders—a classic symptom of thin liquidity rather than a genuine reversal of conviction. On-chain metrics do not show a spike in exchange inflows or exchange whale activity, which aligns with Fakhro’s assessment of apathy, not panic.

Thin volume can exaggerate intraday swings, especially when macro narratives shift suddenly. The upbeat start for equities—rising on optimism about soft landing—adds another layer: crypto often decouples during equity strength when traders rotate into risk-on assets, sidelining Bitcoin temporarily.

August Outlook: Key Levels and Macro Crosswinds

Historically, August is a challenging month for Bitcoin, and this year appears no different. With the $60,000 level now the most watched put strike, the market is pricing in a possible revisit of that support in the coming weeks. The interplay between strong equities and crypto fatigue could keep Bitcoin range-bound between $60,000 and $65,000, with occasional fake-outs driven by low volumes.

The Coinkite security alert—though unrelated to price action directly—adds to a persistent sentiment overhang. As long as institutional and individual participants see infrastructure risks alongside thin liquidity, a breakout above $65,000 will require a significant catalyst, such as a favorable regulatory development or a new wave of ETF inflows.
