Canaan Inc. (NASDAQ: CAN) released its unaudited bitcoin mining update for the month ending September 30, 2026. The company reported stable non-JV installed hashrate of 10 EH/s, produced 44 BTC, and increased its total bitcoin treasury to 1,875 BTC.

Mining Operations and Treasury Growth

The update showed joint venture operations maintained installed hashrate of 4.87 EH/s and operating hashrate of 4.18 EH/s. While network difficulty rose, Canaan’s output remained steady at 44 BTC, bringing its cumulative bitcoin holdings to 1,875 BTC at month-end. Chairman and CEO Nangeng Zhang attributed the result to disciplined execution and noted that Bitcoin markets demonstrated resilience in September despite macroeconomic and policy uncertainty. Hashprice extended its recovery from August, signaling improving mining economics. The 1,875 BTC balance indicates a preference for accumulating mined bitcoin, a dynamic that has become more common as hashprice recovers. The report follows a similar September operational release from CleanSpark Reports 529 BTC in September Operational Update, reflecting a broader trend of public miners publishing monthly production figures.

Canaan’s steady hashrate and growing treasury come as institutional participation in Bitcoin mining remains firm. The company’s focus on integrated compute and energy infrastructure mirrors an industry-wide shift toward efficiency and diversification. This aligns with leadership moves across the sector, such as Orange Juice Names Former NVIDIA AI Platform Veteran Elias Martinez Cohen Chief Technology Officer, which highlight the convergence of mining, AI, and high-performance computing expertise.

Heat Reuse Strategy and What to Watch

Canaan’s update also highlighted progress in energy recovery. Its 8 MW Nordic district heating project is now fully operational, delivering recovered computing heat to approximately 2,800 homes. In Canada, a greenhouse heat recovery project is moving toward planned deployment pending site inspections. These initiatives are part of a strategy to turn waste heat from mining into a useful resource, potentially lowering effective operating costs and strengthening the case for mining as a flexible energy partner. Recovering heat for district heating can reduce carbon intensity and may generate additional revenue or cost-sharing benefits in jurisdictions with supportive energy policy. Zhang said the company will continue advancing its computing and energy initiatives, suggesting that heat reuse could become a more meaningful part of miner economics.

Looking ahead, the key factors for Canaan will be whether hashprice recovery continues, how network difficulty evolves, and whether heat reuse projects scale as planned. Broader crypto infrastructure activity also remains busy, as evidenced by Ethereum Launches zkAPI, Base Rolls Out Cobalt, Balancer and Blast to Shut Down. For now, Canaan’s September update points to a steady operational baseline with a growing bitcoin treasury and early validation of its energy recovery model.
