Chiliz, the sports blockchain, has announced a partnership with Common Goal that will use Chiliz Blockchain technology to support the philanthropic movement’s drive to effect social change through elite football.
The announcement was made on-stage at Paris Blockchain Week today (March 23rd), in a joint presentation by Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus and Common Goal Co-founder Thomas Preiss.
Common Goal unites elite footballers, managers, clubs and brands in a shared effort to drive social change through the game. Players, managers and businesses join Common Goal by pledging a minimum of 1% of their earnings to projects that harness the power of football to tackle the greatest social challenges of our time.
Members of the movement include many leading figures from the men’s and women’s game, such as Juan Mata, Serge Gnabry, Jürgen Klopp, Megan Rapinoe and Pernille Harder.
Common Goal and Chiliz are united in the belief that blockchain technology can bring increased transparency, better governance and provide the scalability to reach new audiences. The two companies will work together on a long-term plan to drive greater social change, which will include a series of initiatives, new products and services focused on:
Bringing increased transparency, accountability and improved governance to the charity sector by delivering more on-chain transactions and activity.
Build web3 communities that deliver direct relationships with fans and charitable communities that share Common Goal’s values.
Mobilising and empowering the community to allow participants to play a greater role in determining the activities of the movement.
Chiliz, creators of Fan Tokens and the Socios.com fan engagement and rewards platform, is building the sports industry’s largest community of fans, brands, and innovative developers, to deliver the network benefits of a dedicated sports web3 ecosystem, which continues to grow with more than 150 partners across the globe and over 1.8 million wallets.
Chiliz will support Common Goal’s 1% pledge, donating 1% of all its future revenues from Fan Token Offerings (FTO®) on the Socios.com app to the movement.
Chiliz and Common Goal will work together on shared initiatives to mobilise the global football community, leveraging Chiliz global sports network to impact social change and to grow the Common Goal audience among teams and fans.
The first joint initiative is The One Shirt Pledge, a call to action to the sports industry and its athletes to give new meaning to memorable match worn items by pledging them to raise funds for Common Goal’s key impact areas of Racial Justice, Mental Health, Gender Equity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, Climate Change and to support those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria through relief funds.
The pledge calls on players and legends to donate a matchworn shirt from their personal collection which has a special memory attached to it. Participants will donate the shirt via a video pledge, explaining what it means to them and the cause they will support.
Pledged shirts will be verified using Gameused.com by Chiliz, a digital memorabilia authentication service which uses Chiliz Blockchain technology to authenticate matchworn items. Gameused.com will also integrate NFC chips onto the items, allowing the video pledge to be viewed directly from the shirt itself using a smartphone.
Digital collectibles, twinned to the real-life shirts and including the video pledge, will also be minted on the Chiliz Blockchain and redeemable for participants.
The One Shirt Pledge will run throughout April and May, with Chiliz and Common Goal mobilising their shared team and athlete networks to drive participation before a Grand Celebrity Auction is held on Matchwornshirt.com. MatchWornShirt is the global leader in the sale and distribution of official match worn and autographed memorabilia via its own real time.
