Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Could Undermine Cryptography Within Two Years

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is warning that artificial intelligence may undermine cryptography much sooner than current security models assume, according to Wu Blockchain’s coverage of his recent remarks. The risk is not necessarily that AI gains an immediate decryption breakthrough, but that machine learning and automated mathematical reasoning could accelerate discovery of attacks against assumptions securing blockchains and other digital systems.

The warning fits into a broader two-year Ethereum roadmap that Buterin has described around AI-assisted scaling and privacy, as covered in Vitalik Buterin Maps Out Ethereum’s Two-Year Path Toward AI-Driven Scaling and Privacy. If AI compresses the time needed for mathematical breakthroughs, then cryptographic parameters and consensus upgrades may need to be reevaluated faster than the typical protocol upgrade cycle allows.

Why AI Changes the Cryptographic Threat Model

Traditional cryptographic security relies on hard mathematical problems such as factoring, discrete logarithms, and elliptic curve operations. The assumption has been that these problems are computationally expensive enough to resist practical attack for decades. AI may change that equation by helping researchers identify structural weaknesses, optimize attack algorithms, or discover new mathematical shortcuts at a faster pace. In that scenario, a two-year window is enough to make some widely deployed primitives feel less safe, even before a full break is demonstrated.

Buterin has separately argued that traditional on-chain applications may vanish within two years, a prospect examined in Vitalik: Traditional On-Chain Applications May No Longer Exist in Two Years. The common thread is rapid change: if user interfaces, application models, and cryptographic assumptions all shift within the same period, builders cannot treat old security margins as permanent.

Implications for Ethereum and the Wider Market

For Ethereum, the warning reinforces the need for continued research into post-quantum cryptography, SNARK-friendly primitives, and faster protocol adaptability. A network with billions of dollars in locked value cannot afford to wait until a practical attack appears before changing its signature schemes or proving systems. At the same time, Buterin has positioned AI as a likely interface layer for Ethereum, as described in Vitalik Buterin: AI Will Become the New UI for Ethereum, which means the same technology that improves usability may also become part of the threat surface.

The near-term takeaway is not panic, but urgency. Developers, auditors, and protocol teams should treat cryptography as a moving target rather than a fixed foundation. The next two years will test whether Ethereum’s upgrade process can move quickly enough to stay ahead of AI-assisted mathematical discovery, while preserving decentralization and security for users.
