Shinhan Asset Management has signed a memorandum of understanding with Plume, an Open Finance platform for institutional assets, to develop a demonstration of a KRW-denominated tokenized fund, according to the announcement. The proof-of-concept is designed to test how high-quality won-denominated assets can be supplied to a dollar-heavy on-chain funding market and create offshore demand for the Korean won.
What the Shinhan-Plume proof-of-concept will test
The pilot marks the first attempt to apply institutional-grade tokenization infrastructure standards to Korean won assets. Shinhan Asset Management will provide a fund related to won ultra-short-term bonds as the underlying asset, while Plume will test potential technical issues that may arise when incorporating tokenization functions offshore. The collaboration is intended to showcase regulatory alignment across whitelist-based transfer controls, onchain mechanisms and KYC/AML systems needed for global markets. The move arrives as market participants track how tokenized securities can operate across jurisdictions, a theme BTC-Pulse has followed in The $11.2 Billion in 2026 Funding That Killed Crypto’s Permissionless Era.
“While dollar-based assets have traditionally served as onchain payment and liquidity infrastructure, it is now time to bring overseas funds into the domestic market through Korean Won-based stablecoins or tokenized securities,” said Lee Seok-won, CEO of Shinhan Asset Management. “This will serve as a crucial intellectual asset to establish Shinhan Asset Management as a leader in global tokenized financial investment products.”
Compliance controls and regulatory alignment in focus
Rather than a broad issuance program, the POC is limited to a proof of concept. It focuses on whether whitelisting methods, KYC/AML functionality and regulatory compliance can work offshore for won-based tokenized securities. That parallels cross-border compliance upgrades seen in other jurisdictions, including Thailand Advances Toward Global Digital Asset Standards as Bitazza Achieves Travel Rule Readiness with Sumsub.
Why this matters for Asia’s tokenized asset push
The Shinhan-Plume pilot highlights how traditional asset managers are moving from general crypto exposure to tokenized fund infrastructure. It aligns with broader institutional activity in tokenized assets, including Coinbase Picks Abu Dhabi for Global Tokenized Asset Push After Securing Regulatory Approval. If the POC demonstrates that won-denominated assets can work within offshore whitelisting and compliance frameworks, it may encourage other Korean institutions to test cross-border tokenized securities instead of waiting for final domestic rulemaking.
